From the Artist
“I’m a French self-taught multi-disciplinary artist living 14 years in Ireland and currently based in Westmeath. I grew up in a very artistic family and always loved making things, exploring new media. I thought for a long time I would never feel legitimate in my art if I didn’t pick one medium and stick to it ; although work on paper is always a grounding force in my practice, realising a few years ago that I thrive in variety and constant experimentation was truly liberating. So far I've mostly worked with paint, plaster, clay, photos, textile and found objects, with a deep interest in texture. My work consistently explores nostalgia, personal and collective memory, childhood and the poetry of the mundane.”
About this show
I deeply believe art can connect people to every possible emotion, even, and maybe most of all, the simplest ones. When I worked on my first banana sculptures a while back, I noticed how happy it made me to play with the representation of something so joyous, so mundane yet somewhat iconic in the world pop culture. Since I started working on the pieces for this show, I noticed the response and reactions to them were just as happy, almost childlike. Bananas seem to elicit universal glee. Making these pieces allowed me to expand on something in my practise that I had hardly touched with those very first sculptures, to fully embrace that playfulness, that cartoonish quality. Art doesn’t always have to be so serious and I think that idea is very much part of Hen’s Teeth’s artistic ethos and message. I couldn’t think of a better place to show this particular series of works and I’m really proud to do so.
