Awesome Tapes - Record Store Day & DJ Set

Join us on Record Store Day for an Awesome Tapes pop up record store by day, with a DJ set by night.

Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog has been shedding light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ he brings the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folkloric pop, left-field dancefloor gems and hip-hop bangers.

Traveling from club to festival to DIY space, Awesome Tapes DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years. In 2011, ATFA developed into a critically acclaimed label, re-releasing records by African artists including Ata Kak, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia and Penny Penny.

His DJ sets on twin tape decks explore deep, regional sounds using analog-anchored agility not heard or seen anywhere else.

There will be an intro to the films and a relaxed post-film discussion.

PERSEPOLIS Dir. Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud. 2007. Iran/ France. 96min. Set in 1970s Iran, the story follows Marjane, an eight year old girl who dreams of changing the world. Raised in a warm and politically aware family, she experiences the fall of the Shah’s regime through her curious young eyes. As she grows into a punk loving teenager, Marjane confronts the harsh realities of a country turning into an oppressive state. Based on the autobiographical book Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi.

Followed by a relaxed post-film audience discussion, and then selections by Flying Fatima afterwards.

Disclosure: Solax is a non-profit initiative led by female immigrants in Ireland: Ingrid, Milo, Sofí, Ira y Perrine. We run it with lots of love and care for this club, with the incredible support of everyone in the film club. If you're in a position to donate and would like to, please do! This will go towards making tickets even more accessible, buying our own gear, and maybe one day being able to financially support our efforts. Anything counts, even the price of an oat latte in Temple Bar (luxury!). Thank you so much for all the help!
